Deep plate 1840's James Edwards Burselm Stoke on Trent England brown transferware pattern "Domestic" Pastural scene in white graniteware

$60.00
Deep plate or rice Bowl 1842-51 James Edwards, Burselm Stoke on Trent England, in brown transferware pattern "Domestic" a Pastural English Country scene. This white graniteware bowl measures 10 1/2" round and is about 1 1/4" deep in center being 2" tall at rim. It has a floral chintz border and is in very Good antique condition with just an small old chip on bottom foot edge and kiln stilt marks, no other chips, cracks, browning or crazing. From the front this looks new!

This was most likely made for the Indonesian market and to be used for rice. The decorations were thoroughly European, for exam- ple transfer-prints depicting roman- tic ruins and pastoral scenes, floral arrangements, chinoiseries, orientalist themes, and geometric patterns. The only concession towards demand in South-East Asia was that, in addition to standard plates and bowls, the potteries made relatively low, round serving dishes or shallow basins, some of them very large. These were not available in the home markets, where typical European dinner services included oval platters, not round ones.I use standard industry quality descriptions for vintage and antique items but if you have questions please just ask.

Earthenware and Ironstone manufacturer at the Dale Hall Pottery, Dale Hall, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England

James Edwards operated (with Thomas Edwards) at the Kilncroft Works & Sylvester Street Works, Burslem) for a couple of years from 1839-41

In 1842 James Edwards purchased the Dale Hall Pottery - which he considerably enlarged and extended ; a flint-mill erected ; new machinery of the most approved construction (including steam jiggers, lathes, jollies, throwing- wheels, and pressing machines for preparing clay by filtration) - the whole place so increased as to be enabled to produce fully six times the amount of ware it was capable of doing when he first entered upon it.

He specialised in producing white ironstone ware which was mainly for export to America

In 1851 he took his son Richard into partnership as James Edwards & Son
