Pair of Antique "Canton" Chinese pattern rimmed plates Petrus Regout Maastricht Holland. 1880's transfer ware in very good condition with wear to the luster and glaze and no crazing. I have other pieces in this pattern with mixed makers which I am listing as well today. Will be very well packed and insured when shipping.
The Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834. It was located in Maastricht, Holland. First, he started a glass factory. Two years later production of pottery began. Pottery production was initially concentrated on so called faience commune - simple pottery for a local market.
Production gradually was adapted to higher standards thanks to hired British specialists to compete with popular British creamware. Petrus sons were incorporated to management of the company. The company name was then changed to Petrus Regout & Co.
In 1879 the image of the sphinx started to be used as a company mark and logo. Since 1899 the company was called De Sphinx.

Most of my items come out of estates on Martha's Vineyard and some from other places in New England. The island of Martha's Vineyard where I have lived for the past 18 years is home to many old original families of sea captains and sailors so fascinating things come up when there are estate sales.
